Woman Dies After Tree Falls on Wedding Party

Image
Photo credit: Instagram From Cosmopolitan A woman was killed and five others were injured when a large eucalyptus tree fell on a wedding party taking photographs at a Southern California park Saturday, authorities said. Several people were trapped under the tree at Whittier's Penn Park, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Video from the scene showed fire crews using chain saws to cut through the downed branches. Four of the injured suffered scrapes and bruises, officials said. A 4-year-old girl was listed in critical condition due to head trauma, the Los Angeles Times reported. Witnesses described hearing a loud crack and seeing people run from the area. The tree could have been weakened by California's ongoing drought and recent heavy rain could have contributed to its fall, officials said. An arborist will assess the area Sunday, officials said. Update 12/19, 11:00 p.m.: A relative has confirmed Monday that the woman killed by a fallin...

These are the words you will need if you want to swear like an Elizabethan

Image
View photos Long-lost swear words used centuries ago have been revealed - and some prove to be a lot tamer than the ones we are used to today. Among the list of insults are such gems as ‘nippy’, ‘cucumber’ and ‘bald-a***’. The swear words were uncovered by Dr Todd Gray MBE, who spent years trawling through a staggering 40,000 documents from the church and state courts in the 1500s and 1600s. His results are presented in the book ‘How to Swear Like an Elizabethan in Devon’ and the monograph ‘Strumpets and Ninnycocks: Name calling in Devon, 1540-1640’. ‘Wittol’ means a husband complicit in his wife’s adultery, ‘cucumber’ was used to describe a husband of a woman having an affair, while ‘tarse’ literally means ‘penis’. View photos Research: Dr Gray went through thousands of documents to find the swear words (SWNS) The documents Dr Gray found related to slander cases where people had complained about being insulted in person. He explained: “At the very...

Adult acne: What causes it and how to prevent it

Image
[Photo: Getty] Bad skin sucks. And it’s only getting worse. Rather depressingly, rates of adult acne have gone up 200 per cent in the last year alone. And not just young adults. According to recent research, more than a third of people seeking treatment for acne are over the age of 35.  Some of the most beautiful women in the world, including Victoria Beckham, Cameron Diaz and Katy Perry, have talked about their struggle with spots. It’s not just us ‘normal’ people that are plagued with break outs.  With around 50 per cent of adults suffering from acne at some point, and with 80 per cent of those being women, it’s important to understand what’s really going on when it comes to problem skin. What causes adult acne? Acne is directly caused when follicles become blocked due to an over production of sebum - that’s the oil content in the skin on your face. The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and debris, clogging up the follicles and, in turn...

Fighting further buries hopes for Syria truce

Image
View photos   BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels and pro-government forces battled each other on major frontlines near Aleppo and Hama, and air strikes reportedly killed a dozen people including four medical workers, as a ceasefire appeared to have completely unravelled. The renewed battles demonstrated the thin prospects for reviving a truce that collapsed into fresh fighting and bombardments on Monday, including an attack on an aid convoy which U.S. officials believe was carried out by Russian jets. Moscow denies involvement. The U.N. Security Council was due to hold a high-level meeting on Syria later on Wednesday. Despite accusing Moscow of being behind the bombing of the aid convoy, the United States says the ceasefire agreement it sponsored jointly with Russia is "not dead". But the deal, probably the final hope of reaching a settlement on Syria before the administration of President Barack Obama leaves office, is fo...

More than 300 reindeer killed by lightning in Norway

Some 323 wild reindeer lie dead after being struck by lightning on a hill side on Hardangervidda mountain plateau in southern Norway on August 27, 2016 (AFP Photo/Haavard Kjontvedt) Oslo (AFP) - More than 300 wild reindeer have been killed by lightning in southern Norway, officials said Monday, in the largest such incident known to date. The 323 reindeer, including 70 young, were found on Friday by a gamekeeper on the Hardangervidda plateau, a national park where Europe's largest herd of some 10,000 wild reindeer roam freely. Television footage showed the animals' dead bodies lying close together on the ground. "There were very strong storms in the area on Friday. The animals stay close together in bad weather and these ones were hit by lightning," an official from the Norwegian Environment Agency, Kjartan Knutsen, told AFP. Reindeer are social creatures and usually move in packs. "It's u...

Maize: Benefits, Nutrition, Side Effects and Information

Image
Maize , scientific name Zea mays , also known as corn or mielie/mealie , is one of the most extensively cultivated cereal crops on Earth. More maize is produced, by weight, than any other grain, and almost every country on Earth cultivates maize commercially for a variety of uses. The abundant cultivation of maize globally has led to concerns about monocropping and biodiversity, especially since genetic evidence suggests that maize is radically less diverse than it was originally. In addition, maize is heavily genetically modified, and the crop has been used as a rallying point by the anti-Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) community. The exact domestication point for maize is unknown, but it is estimated that the crop is at least 5,000 years old. The plant was originally domesticated in Mesoamerica, and appears to be related to species of wild grass which still exist in Central American today. People in many English...
