Star sues over reports she lied about her age

Rebel Wilson Suing Over Stories Claiming She Lied About Her Age And Background

Rebel Wilson is taking publisher Bauer Media to court for defamation over an article which appeared in an Australian magazine.
Woman’s Day published two stories in print and on its website in May 2015 which claimed that the 36-year-old actress had lied about her age, her name and her background in order to get ahead in Hollywood, as well as allegedly fabricating other stories from her childhood.
The stories were then picked up by other media outlets, as well as other titles published by Bauer including Australian Women’s Weekly and OK Magazine.
The lawsuit, which was filed to the supreme court in Victoria yesterday, said that the articles painted her as a ‘serial liar who has invented fantastic stories in order to make it in Hollywood’, and were purposely published around the time of the release of 'Pitch Perfect 2’ in order to 'attract public and media attention within Australia and internationally’.
It also claims that the publisher took a year to remove the articles, despite being provided with proof from Wilson that she had not lied about her name.
The writ goes on to say that Wilson was 'gravely injured in her feelings, credit and reputation, has been humiliated and embarrassed and has suffered loss and damage’.
She’s also suing for special damages, claiming that she was removed from and lost out on other roles as a result of the articles.
Following the publishing of the pieces, Wilson suggested that it was down to 'tall poppy syndrome’.
She said in an interview on ABC in February: “If I was guilty of something which, I mean, I don’t really have any skeletons in my closet - which is why it’s quite hard for people to write bad stuff about me.
“You know, I don’t have a drug addiction, or secret child. But I think, when I did go to America, I kind of just stopped saying my age. It’s Hollywood, come on, people.
“The reality is, when you work in America, you have to show your passport and your visa for every single job, so it’s not like you can hide how old you are.”
